A Flexible Kind of Therapy for the Fear of Being Sick

18 July 2026·1 min read

Emetophobia — an intense fear of vomiting — is one of those problems that doesn't fit neatly into a box. This case study points out that it often overlaps with several other anxiety problems at once: it can look a bit like a specific phobia, a bit like panic, a bit like OCD, and a bit like constant worry. So the researchers tried a “transdiagnostic” approach to CBT — meaning instead of using a treatment built for one single diagnosis, they used a flexible version designed to tackle the features shared across many anxiety disorders. Why is that clever? Because when a fear has lots of moving parts, a rigid one-size-fits-all programme can miss some of them. A flexible approach can target the whole picture — the avoidance, the physical panic, the intrusive “what if I'm sick” thoughts — together. There's still not much research on emetophobia, which can leave sufferers feeling overlooked, but work like this shows that thoughtful, adaptable CBT holds real promise. If a fear of vomiting is shrinking your world, know that treatment options exist and a psychologist can help you explore them.
