Fear of Vomiting Rarely Travels Alone, Research Shows

18 September 2026·1 min read

Emetophobia, an intense fear of vomiting or of being around vomit, is often assumed to be a fairly isolated fear. Research co-authored by Gecko House's Dr Mark Sykes looked at how often it appears alongside other conditions, using structured clinical interviews with 64 adults who had emetophobia, rather than relying on questionnaires alone.

The results showed that people with emetophobia were more likely than the general population to also meet the criteria for depression, generalised anxiety disorder, panic disorder, social anxiety disorder, and obsessive-compulsive disorder. Generalised anxiety, panic disorder, health anxiety and OCD stood out as the most common companions. When assessed through a proper clinical interview rather than self-report questionnaires, though, the actual rates of these overlapping conditions came out lower than earlier studies had suggested.

This matters for treatment. Someone seeking help for a fear of vomiting may also be carrying an anxiety or mood disorder that hasn't been named yet, and treating only the phobia can miss part of the picture. A thorough assessment that checks for these related conditions gives a much clearer sense of what's actually going on. If a fear of vomiting is affecting your life, it is worth having it properly assessed rather than managed alone.
